Today is Cheer Up the Lonely Day, created by Francis Pesek from Detroit, Michigan who derived the concept as a way of encouraging kindness toward those lonely or forgotten. In support of this day, I posted a poem, “Gift of a Smile”, taken from my book, Gift of Life . It is available on various mediums such as greeting cards, journals, pillows, tote bags, and apparel within my online store Sincerely Sylvia.
We only dwell here for a while;
Stop briefly to offer a smile.
GIFT OF A SMILE
We only dwell here for a while;
Stop briefly to offer a smile.
Smiles are pleasant gifts to give;
They make life easier to live.
Smiles demand little energy—
Just a simple curve of the lips.
Someone’s undivided attention,
It captures quickly—firmly grips.
A special touch rests in a smile,
Inspiring those along the way.
It elevates a low spirit,
Helping one have a better day.
A smile bids another welcome
By display of friendly greeting.
It’s a basic act of kindness,
Deeming a person worth meeting.
Something magic is in a smile,
Connecting deep within the heart.
A truly inviting gesture—
It is how relationships start.
A smile is an expressive tool—
A subtle approach to most show
What one is feeling down inside,
When fitting speech declines to flow.
A smile is a precious jewel—
A demonstration of God’s love.
It lets others know you are blessed
With the presence of Him above.
